The Bear

The Bear

"Fool! Oaf! Blockhead!"

As part of the 2006/07 Ensemble Studio at the Canadian Opera Company, I directed William Walton's The Bear. Based on Chekhov's one-act comedy of the same name, the plot revolves around Popova, a widow who is steadfastly mourning her late husband. When Smirnov, one of Popov's creditors appears at her door, tempers are lost and sparks fly. But, by the end of this comic opera, these two warring nemeses are passionately in love.
