The Ugly One

Cinderella

"In one magic moment all turned to bliss and gladness..."

I was asked by the COC to create a 50-minute version of Cinderella based on Cendrillon and La Cenerentola. This was an incredibly exciting process, during which time I familiarized myself with both original scores and stories, cutting and honing, and later re-translating some of the libretto. I collaborated with designer Robin Fisher to create a fun and whimsical playground for our singers, and invented specific choreography to match Rossini's bubbly music.

I have directed this production twice, in 2009 and the following year. In 2010, the School Tour Title Sponsor Xstrata Nickel supported a tour of the opera to the Inuit communities Salluit and Kangiqsujuaq in the Nunavik region of northern Québec. 400 school children and community members saw these Nunavik performances.
